Wellness Exams
At Society Hill Veterinary Hospital, we believe biannual examinations are vital to your pet’s overall health. During routine examinations, our veterinarians will thoroughly examine your pets which allows them to evaluate your pet’s overall well-being. At your pet’s visit, we will also update any vaccinations your pet needs based on their lifestyle and perform routine lab work.
This will also ensure they stay up to date on vaccinations and other preventative care that is important for good health, like heartworm prevention and regular deworming. Our hope with routine examinations is that we can catch potential problems before they become serious ones.
Preventative Medicine
There is ample evidence supporting the benefits of preventative exams and testing, which could identify abnormalities that may indicate future problems. Results of routine bloodwork and fecal testing help veterinarians detect diseases and conditions, leading to earlier interventions that help patients of all ages live healthy lives for as long as possible.
According to an AAHA-supported study done by IDEXX laboratories in 2021, 25% of dogs aged 2-10 years and almost 50% of dogs aged 11+ years required follow up after routine bloodwork and fecal testing revealed significant findings. Nearly 30,000 canine samples were analyzed.
Early diagnostic testing also gives the veterinarian baseline values, so she/he can monitor trends and, if necessary, create individualized treatment plans. And when no abnormality is detected, we enjoy celebrating the good news with you!
It’s also important to know that pets age more rapidly than humans, meaning disease and illness develop faster as well. Often times health problems that go undetected can become more serious issues when left untreated, so checkups are important even when your pet appears healthy.
About Your Pet’s Wellness Exam
Our staff will get a chance to talk to you and see if you are having any trouble with your pet. We will also go over diet, preventative medicine, and exercise to ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible. Then, one of our veterinarians will do a complete physical examination on your pet. It is always good to have a baseline in case your pet ever becomes ill.
We also want to monitor your pet’s weight, ensuring that your pet stays a healthy weight. It is much easier to start a diet when a pet is a pound overweight instead of fifteen!
